Justin Brewer Urges Small Businesses To Take Control Of Credit Card Processing
Entrepreneur and Greenhub founder calls for more transparency, education, and DIY reviews of merchant fees
SOMERS, CT / ACCESS Newswire / December 8, 2025 / Entrepreneur and founder Justin Brewer is calling on small and mid sized business owners to stop treating credit card processing as "just another bill" and start treating it as a core part of their profit strategy. Drawing on his experience in merchant services and his work with retail, e commerce, and B2B companies, he is raising awareness about hidden fees, confusing contracts, and missed opportunities for residual income.
"Owners can tell you every detail about their product, but when you ask about their payment processing, they shrug," Brewer said. "They hand you a statement and say, ‘I have no idea what this means, but the fees keep going up.' That should not be normal."
In the United States, card payments make up the majority of non cash transactions for many small businesses. Processing fees regularly range from 2 to 4 percent of each sale. Over a year, that can add up to tens of thousands of dollars leaving a business in silent costs. Yet many owners never review their statements or question how their pricing is set.
Brewer believes that has to change. "The biggest mistake I see is treating processing like a box to check instead of a core part of the business," he explained. "If you are not looking at your fees a few times a year, you will miss increases and new charges."
He is advocating for a simple, self guided approach that any owner can start on their own:
Print and mark up your last three processing statements.
Circle every fee you do not understand. Make a list of questions.Learn the basics of interchange and pricing models.
"You do not need to be an expert," Brewer said. "But if you can explain in simple language how your fees are calculated, you are already in a stronger position."Check the contract term and any early termination clause.
Many merchants are surprised to learn how long they are locked in or what it costs to leave.Set a reminder to review fees at least twice a year.
Treat it like a financial checkup, not a one time event.
According to Brewer, success for business owners is not just higher revenue. It is clarity and control. "Today, success looks more like freedom and impact," he said. "Freedom for me, so I can work from the mountains one week and from Las Vegas the next. But also freedom for my clients, who get to keep more of their revenue and feel in control of their payments."
Brewer also wants more people to see the opportunity in merchant services as a career path, especially those who want to build residual income. "Every time a business runs a card, a tiny piece of that fee can go back to the person who set up the account," he noted. "Over time, those small pieces can add up to real income that does not depend on a nine to five job."
His perspective is shaped by years of working directly with merchants who felt confused and stuck. One Las Vegas retailer, burned by multiple providers, came to him with a stack of statements and deep skepticism. Instead of pitching, Brewer spent an hour walking through each line item and highlighting where they were overpaying. "They did not switch right away," he recalled. "Six months later, they called back and said, ‘You were the only one who did not rush me.' That account has been with me for years. That is the power of education and trust."
Brewer's call to action is simple and practical.
"You do not have to build a fintech startup to improve your situation," he said. "Start by understanding the tools you already use every day. Read your statement. Ask better questions. Make processing work for you instead of against you."
He believes that if more owners adopt this mindset, the cumulative impact will be significant. Lower fees and better terms mean more cash for hiring, inventory, and growth, not just bank charges. "For me, the real goal is not more transactions," Brewer said. "It is more choices for the people behind them."
